This unit forms part of the Long Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP), delivered by Serco Defence RTO. This course is designed to equip members of the boating community with the essential skills and knowledge required to operate marine radio equipment safely, legally, and effectively. Aligned with Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) requirements, the training prepares participants to communicate confidently across a range of marine environments, including enclosed, inshore, and international waters.
Throughout this course, participants will develop practical and theoretical knowledge in marine radio operations. Key topics include correct radio procedures, with a strong focus on distress, urgency, and safety communications using VHF (Very High Frequency), MF (Medium Frequency), and HF (High Frequency) radios.
Learners will also explore the use of Digital Selective Calling (DSC), gaining an understanding of how this technology enhances maritime safety. The course covers the operation and controls of standard marine radio equipment, including channel selection, signal clarity, and troubleshooting. In addition, participants will be introduced to basic maintenance practices and the regulatory framework governing marine radio use in Australian and international waters.
The MARC043 unit is delivered as part of the MARSS00010 Marine Radio Operator’s VHF and HF Skill Set. Assessment for this unit consists of both knowledge-based and practical components. Participants are required to complete online theory assessments using an electronic device such as a phone, tablet, or laptop.
In addition, learners will undertake practical demonstrations where they must show competency in operating marine radio equipment, including sending and responding to distress, urgency, and safety messages. All assessments must be completed to a satisfactory standard in line with ACMA requirements.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for MARC043. Serco Defence will submit the required documentation to the Office of Maritime Communications (OMC), who will issue the Long Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP).
Graduates will have their details entered into the national Search and Rescue database, enabling them to assist in emergency situations if required. The LROCP is also a mandatory requirement for those pursuing a Master less than 24 metres Near Coastal qualification through Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
The total cost of the LROCP course, which includes MARC043, is $275.00. Fees must be paid in full at the commencement of the course, with invoices issued upon enrolment. Learners are to provide a passport photo or similar to Serco Defence RTO who will guide you through the completion of your Application for Recognition of Unit of Competency to be submitted to ACMA.
This course provides a valuable certification for recreational and professional mariners alike, supporting safe and compliant communication practices across Australian and international waters.
