HLTHPS009 Perform Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation Overview

The HLTHPS009 unit of competency is delivered in a blended format.

To undertake the course, you will be required to complete:

  • A self-directed online eLearning module
  • Attend a practical training workshop
  • Complete x 3 supervised IV Cannulation insertion with an approved supervisor in your workplace
  • Complete x 1 supervised IV Cannula monitoring event with an approved supervisor in your workplace

 

Your module will be supported by an RTO accredited trainer who can assist your course progression and help with troubleshooting if you experience any difficulties throughout the course.

Learners attending this training will have:

  • A healthcare qualification training such as nursing or paramedicine for whom peripheral intravenous cannulation is part of the job role
  • Hold a current registration with Australian Heath Practitioners Regulation Agency (APHRA)

 

Learners attending this training will have a relevant health qualification for whom peripheral intravenous cannulation is part of the job role. The learner should be registered with Australian Heath Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Completing HLTHPS009 will equip you with the skills and knowledge to safely and effectively perform peripheral intravenous (IV) cannulation in a clinical setting. By the end of the course, you will be able to:

Prepare for Peripheral IV Cannulation
  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of veins relevant to IV access.
  • Identify suitable veins for cannulation based on patient condition and procedure requirements.
  • Select and prepare the appropriate IV cannula, equipment, and solutions.
  • Follow infection control and aseptic techniques to minimise risks.

 

Perform Safe and Effective Cannulation
  • Assess the patient and communicate the procedure to ensure informed consent.
  • Apply proper vein selection techniques and insertion methods.
  • Insert the IV cannula using correct hand techniques and needle control.
  • Recognise and manage pain, discomfort, or adverse reactions during the procedure.

 

Manage and Monitor the IV Site
  • Secure and maintain the IV cannula to prevent dislodgement or complications.
  • Identify signs of infiltration, phlebitis, and infection at the cannulation site.
  • Administer IV therapy safely (if within scope of practice).
  • Document the procedure accurately and report any complications.

 

Troubleshoot Common IV Cannulation Challenges
  •  Recognise and address difficult venous access situations.
  • Manage failed cannulation attempts and determine when to escalate care.
  • Understand best practices for removing IV cannulas safely and disposing of sharps correctly.

 

This course ensures you develop confidence and competence in IV cannulation, making you a valuable asset in various healthcare, emergency, and clinical settings.

    You are firstly required to complete the assessment questions within the online learning package where a pass rate of 100% is required.

    You will then be required to submit;

    • Evidence of 3 successful IV Cannulation insertions under the supervision and guidance of their trainer or the appropriately trained clinician. demonstrating all the criteria outlined in the assessment tools.
    • Evidence of 1 assessment tool for the monitoring and removal of a PIVC.

     

    Once all assessment tools are completed, they will be uploaded into your learner portal for validation and verification.  You will have 6 months from the completion of your practical training to complete all clinical assessments.

    Candidates who enrol and complete the requirements of HLTHPS009 will be awarded a statement of attainment for the following units of competency.

    The course duration for HLTAID011 is outlined below, course completion times may vary based on factors such as prior knowledge and individual learning pace.

    • 6. 5 hours face to face practical workshop and assessment day
