Completing this unit will equip you with the skills and knowledge to safely and effectively perform peripheral intravenous (IV) cannulation in a clinical setting. By the end of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Prepare, select, and manage veins, cannulas, and equipment safely, following all infection control and aseptic procedures.
  • Perform IV insertion effectively, monitor the site, manage patient comfort, and respond to any complications.
  • Troubleshoot challenges such as difficult veins or failed insertions, and remove cannulas safely using correct procedures.

This unit ensures you gain complete competence and confidence in IV cannulation, making you capable of performing the procedure independently and safely in a variety of healthcare, emergency, and clinical settings.

    Assessment for this unit includes:

    • Completion of online eLearning modules with assessment questions (100% pass required)
    • Submission of evidence for 3 successful IV cannulation insertions under supervision, meeting all criteria outlined in the assessment tools
    • Submission of 1 assessment for monitoring and removal of a PIVC

    All assessments are designed to reflect real-world clinical scenarios and are conducted and evaluated by accredited trainers.

    Once completed, all assessment evidence is uploaded to the learner portal for validation. Learners have up to 6 months from the practical training to complete the required clinical assessments.

    Upon successful completion, learners will receive a Statement of Attainment for HLTHPS009 – Perform Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation.
