HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid Overview

This nationally recognised course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to respond to a wide range of emergencies and deliver advanced first aid care until professional medical help arrives.

Designed for individuals who may be required to coordinate first aid responses in the workplace or community, the course covers a broad spectrum of scenarios including trauma, medical emergencies, environmental injuries, and incident management. Learners will also develop strong communication and leadership skills essential in high-pressure situations.

Participants should meet the following criteria:

  •  Minimum Age Requirement:
    • Must be at least 16 years old.
  •  Physical Capacity
    •  Must be capable of performing practical demonstrations, including 2 minutes of continuous CPR compressions on the floor and rescue breathing on manikins.
  • Online Learning Access
    •  For the online or pre-course component, participants should have reliable access to a computer, desktop, smartphone, tablet, or other internet-enabled device. A computer or desktop is recommended for the best learning experience.

Upon successful completion of this unit, participants will be able to:

Respond to an emergency situation
    • Recognise and assess emergency situations.
    • Ensure safety for self, bystanders, and the casualty.
    • Assess the casualty and determine the need for first aid response.
    • Deploy resources appropriately in line with workplace or site procedures.
    • Seek assistance from emergency services.

 

Apply appropriate first aid procedures
    • Perform single-rescuer or two-rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
    • Provide first aid in line with established principles.
    • Display respectful behavior towards the casualty and obtain consent where possible.
    • Use available resources and equipment to ensure the casualty’s comfort.
    • Operate first aid and ancillary equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions.
    • Monitor the casualty’s condition and respond appropriately.

 

Coordinate first aid activities until arrival of medical assistance
    • Identify required resources and establish communication with appropriate personnel or emergency services.
    • Deploy resources efficiently to ensure timely treatment.
    • Monitor the condition of casualties in accordance with first aid principles and workplace procedures.
    • Coordinate evacuation of casualties following relevant procedures.

 

Communicate details of the incident
    • Accurately convey incident details to emergency services.
    • Report incident details in line with workplace or site procedures.
    • Complete applicable documentation, including incident report forms.
    • Maintain privacy and confidentiality in accordance with policies.

 

Review the incident
    • Recognise potential psychological impacts on self and other rescuers and seek help when required.
    • Arrange support services for personnel involved in the incident.
    • Contribute to a review of the first aid response as needed.

    Upon successful completion of the HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid course, participants will be awarded a nationally recognized Statement of Attainment.
