HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is a nationally recognised unit that equips participants with essential skills to perform life-saving CPR in emergency situations. This short, practical course introduces the DRSABCD algorithm, correct CPR techniques for adults and infants, and how to effectively use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Delivered through a blend of online theory and hands-on practice, participants learn both foundational knowledge and practical application in a safe group setting. This unit is suitable for a wide range of industries including healthcare, education, fitness, or anyone wanting to be prepared for medical emergencies. The training ensures you can respond confidently and effectively.

There are no prerequisites for enrolment in HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. However, participants should meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum Age Requirement: Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Physical Capacity: Must be capable of performing practical demonstrations, including 2 minutes of continuous CPR compressions on the floor and rescue breathing on manikins.
  • Online Learning Access: For the online or pre-course component, participants should have reliable access to a computer, desktop, smartphone, tablet, or other internet-enabled device. A computer or desktop is recommended for the best learning experience.

This unit of competency is suitable for individuals who may be required to respond to medical emergencies in various settings. This course is well-suited for workplace first aiders, childcare workers, teachers, support staff, fitness professionals, and community volunteers. It is also beneficial for those in customer service roles, sports coaching, or any industry where basic first aid skills are essential.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

    HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is assessed through a combination of theory and practical demonstrations to ensure comprehensive skills acquisition. Methods include:

    Online Knowledge Checks

    Multiple-choice or short-answer questions completed via the online learning component to confirm understanding of essential concepts.

    Practical Demonstrations

    Hands-on demonstration of CPR techniques, rescue breathing, and AED usage on manikins, evaluated by a qualified trainer.

    Scenario-Based Assessment

    Simulation of real-life emergencies where participants must identify hazards, apply the DRSABCD approach, and deliver effective CPR and defibrillation.

    HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is a nationally recognised unit of competency under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Upon successful completion of all assessments, you will be awarded a Statement of Attainment in HLTAID009.

    This certification remains valid for 12 months, aligning with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) recommendations, after which a refresher course is recommended to maintain current skills.

    For your comfort and safety during clinical training, please bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated throughout the session. We also recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and flat, closed-toe shoes. Practical components of the course, including CPR, require physical movement such as kneeling on the floor and performing chest compressions, so attire that allows for ease of movement is essential.

    Typically runs for 3 hours in total,  However, actual completion times may vary depending on individual learning and pre-existing knowledge.

    • 1.5 hours of online learning
    • 1.5 hours of face-to-face simulation.
